Obsession Everlasting is a vampire romance so fitting its genre, it is destined to become the standard by which all other vampire romance will be measured. Lisa Phillips' debut presents a powerful first effort, with love, loneliness and longing on every page.
The vampire, Simon, walks through the streets of Savannah and is drawn to the fetching, fire-haired Fallyn Mitchell. His tender side is soon tested when the evil vampire Lucas embroils himself in their romance. But the dastardly fiend has much larger ambitions.
Philips goes through great lengths to imbue her story with humor and passion. The description of one of the couple's first kisses is breathtaking and wry ("Don't do that again," she says, "I can't think when you do that"). Later, the moonlit stallion ride across the shore is sure to become a classic others will emulate.
She's so good a writer that never does the humor or the tough talk of her heroine get in the way of her story, as can happen when writers try to be funny. Her descriptions of Savannah are lush, and create a dreamscape in which readers are blissfully immersed.
The complications that arise test all her players, and the true character of each is revealed: brave and noble or selfish and determined. Minor characters such as Tristan and Katie are compelling and engaging, but surprisingly, it's another minor character that steals every scene he's in: Reece is a rogue with a heart of gold, a bad boy who plays by his own set of rules. He tells a joke, and the coy author never lets us in on the punchline: "have you heard the one about a priest, a rabbi and a vampire?" Similarly, Phillips sets up a satisfying story in Obsession Everlasting, but like that joke without an ending, the everlasting obsessions here suggest more things to come.
